Will Sheriff Joe Arpaio Run For Governor Of Arizona?

From the news stories, it looks like Sheriff Joe is likely to run. The polls indicate he’d win by a landslide. As governor, he’d no longer be in charge of the jail system, but he’d be the most powerful political figure in Arizona. What next? The presidency?

Here’s one story from Fox:

There's a new name being thrown into the hat for Arizona's Governor race.  We know the current Governor, Jan Brewer, wants to keep her job for another four years, but she'll have some competition.
How about Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio?  It's not the first time Arpaio's name has come up for Governor, but a new poll shows he could win.

The first Rasmussen Reports telephone poll of next year's GOP Primary in Arizona shows Arpaio attracting 47% of the vote while four other candidates split another 44%.
In second place, with 22% of the overall vote, is state Treasurer Dean Martin. Brewer is third at 10%. Former state GOP Chairman John Munger and Paradise Valley Mayor Vernon Parker each attract six percent (6%) of the vote.
In another example of his potential to dominate the race early, 58% of likely Republican Primary voters have a favorable opinion of Arpaio. Just 16% say the same about Martin, while only nine percent (9%) are that upbeat about Brewer. The comparable numbers for Munger and Parker are two percent (2%) and (1%) respectively.

So will he run for office?

Here's what the Sheriff is saying on his Twitter page:

"If there ever was a time to consider a run, now may be the time.  I continue to be asked by my supporters to step up and fill a leadership void."

"I can not ignore the results of this latest Rasmussen poll about the possibility of me entering the AZ governor's race for 2010."

Sheriff Arpaio has a high profile not only in Maricopa County, but across the country as well.  He's famous for cracking down on illegal immigration, raiding businesses suspected of hiring illegals and his crime sweeps.  Currently, Arpaio is in a battle with the Feds - the Justice Department is investigating him and some of his powers to arrest illegals have been taken away.  All of this has only made him stronger in Arizona.

I remember studying this in high school during the Nazi section. Look at what happens to students in just 6 days. Explains a lot about Joe A-Ra-Pie-Hole.

"What happens when you put good people in an evil place? Does humanity win over evil, or does evil triumph? These are some of the questions we posed in this dramatic s...imulation of prison life conducted in the summer of 1971 at Stanford University.

How we went about testing these questions and what we found may astound you. Our planned two-week investigation into the psychology of prison life had to be ended prematurely after only six days because of what the situation was doing to the college students who participated. In only a few days, our guards became sadistic and our prisoners became depressed and showed signs of extreme stress. Please join me on a slide tour describing this experiment and uncovering what it tells us about the nature of human nature."

  9. It has happened before. Reagan became governor of California... and then president.

What kind of person was Reagan? Google terms like People's Park, Bloody Thursday, tear gas, and Reagan... Read that link (Wikipedia) - a summary can't do it justice.

Almost a year after a student was killed by police-fired buckshot, and the college campus where his memorial service was held was tear-gassed so intensely that the gas drifted into schools and a hospital, Reagan addressed the California Council of Growers with this remarkable statement:

"If it takes a bloodbath, let's get it over with. No more appeasement."

There's some real nastiness in this country. Yes, Arpaio could be a future president.

You lefties need to quit your whining.

Arpaio as governor is what Arizona needs to get its house in order. He'd make a great president.

And doesn't Phoenix have the highest murder rate in the US? He's really doing a bang-up job!

I have to admit, I do love to hate that man. The things that come out of his mouth are truly unbelievable and laughable. He panders to the fearful and the weak.

    Hello Again,

Just watched your video on how to survive Joe Arpaio's jail system. Pretty cool, and good advise as well. Maybe Arpaio could show it to all new prisoner's while they are still in intake. Not Likely!! By the way, it is my considered opinion that Arpaio will never be Governor of Arizona despite what any Fox (very right wing biased news organization) poll says. The reason is simple. The Republican party has repeatedly told him they will not support him if he attempts to seek any office other than sheriff. He has way too much baggage to survive the close kind of scrutiny that comes with a governors race and the leaders of the republican party know this. They can barely stand him being sheriff. Can you imagine the embarrassment he would bring to Arizona as a governor for four years.

Love JOE! I get so sick of people's rhetoric about him! Blah, blah, blah, you're not legally here, we don't care what you have to say because we will vote him in again...get over it! I wish they would have put Joe in as Secretary of Homeland Security. Current administration, especially "president" ineffective, useless drivel mongers! I wish more people like him were in charge, I like people who actually READ the law and FOLLOW the law. Look at the laws, he is not violated any statute or act.

    Dear Anonymous said,
If you think Joe Arpaio reads and follows the law, perhaps you yourself should take a peek at the U.S.Constitution, which is the rock upon all our laws are written and something Arpaio has violated six ways from Sunday. Please note that it was the Bush Department of Justice who last filed a Federal Lawsuit against Arpaio and his cronies for repeatedly violating the Constitution. You are certainly entitled to your opinion but at least get your facts straight and quit spouting mindless rhetoric.

For the second time in 2009, Joe Arpaio has been invited to speak at the ASU campus.

Arpaio targets and violates the human rights of the Native and Latino communities. We are students who come from those communities that are under attack by Arpaio and MSCO.

We will not allow this event to take place without expressing our concerns against Arpaio. We will unite to protest Joe Arpaio and allow him to witness OUR 1st Amendment right to protest a racist sheriff.

To be clear: We are not trying to silence anyone - including Mr. Arpaio. The point of this protest is to voice the counter-opinion, not represented by the forum, and to hold the University and Cronkite School accountable for an irresponsible choice of speaker.

Seating & space is limited. Please arrive early to ensure a seat during the forum.

Arpaio was actually the first Arizona politician who realized that you could actually trick people into voting for you by pretending to be tough on crime. Got to give him credit for that.
